Five Solas (Sola Scriptura, Soli Deo Gloria, Solo Christo, Sola Gratia, and Sola Fide): following on from a past series of occasional sermons David’s preached on these ideas you can find further information about them in a number of places: The Five Solas of the Reformation (a short summary of the principles), and Monergism (another short summary of each thesis, with detailed links to follow up in more detail). R. Scott Clarke has an interesting blog posting on the origins of the terms (Heidelblog, 11 Sep 2008)

How to listen to sermons

What is the right way to listen to a sermon? In “How to Listen to a Sermon”, Philip Ryken gives some helpful advice coming from 35 years of sermon listening. “Frankly,” he says, “I fear that far too many sermons passed through my eardrums without registering in my brain or reaching my heart. So what is the right way to listen to a sermon? ... read more in “How to Listen to a Sermon”, Window on the World, 22 September 2002 >>>

Tim Challies has posted some advice on the same topic from George Whitefield (who guest blogs on his site!!). In Whitefield's own words, “Here are some cautions and directions, in order to help you hear sermons with profit and advantage.” It may be old, but George has some edifying advice that is well worth pondering. ... read more in “How to Listen to a Sermon”, Challies.com, 26 August 2007 >>>

How can you stop sermons being boring? No, this is not advice for the pastor, but for all of us as we listen to God’s Word week by week as it is preached. Mark Barnes asks, “Is the way a sermon is heard any less important than the way it is preached?” ... read more in “How can you stop sermons being boring?”, Ephesians 4:14, 20 Mar 2007 >>>

Christopher Ash has written Listen up! A practical guide to listening to sermons (Good Book Company, ISBN: 978-1-906334673). It comes highly commended. Read some recommendations and an extract. Phil Dunn has reviewed it at the Unashamed Workman blog (15 Aug 2009).
