SIDEBAR
Dale Ralph Davis, The Way of the Righteous in the Muck of Life (Christian Focus), 144pp.
This is an excellent introduction to the Psalms, covering just the first 12. Derek Thomas says, "I would cross the ocean to hear Davis preach -- expositonal, hilarious illustrations, rooted in life's realities and unashamedly applicatory whilst sensitive to redemptive-historical nunaces (a rare gift!). This a gem and you should buy a dozen copies -- giving the first to your pastor and the second to your mother." (reformation21 blog, 25 Aug 2010). He's absolutely right, but do check with David before he's awash with copies.
Alec Motyer, Journey: Psalms for Pilgrim People (IVP, 2009).
This books deals with Psalms 12–136, the 'Songs of Ascents' and a couple beyond. It would prove a good follow up to the previous book. It is described as "A devotional read to hearten both weary and sure-footed travellers." It is well worth reading, with something in every chapter that will get you thinking and keep you challenged.
Alec Motyer, Treasures of the King: Psalms from the Life of David (IVP).
This devotional book traces the course of David's life through his autobiographical Psalms: From triumphant boy hero to persecution in the court of Saul. From gifted musician to compromised adulterer and murderer. From his exile on the run to his coronation as the leader of God's people.
The King's songs are a treasure-chest of jewels, telling not mere history but timeless truths about the King of Kings himself, David's magnificent God. With warmth and insight, the author draws out the lessons David learned in his turbulent life with the Lord and the rich gems he has bequeathed to followers of God today.
Richard D. Phillips, Walking with God: Learning Discipleship in the Psalms (Banner of Truth Trust).
We all want to find happiness in this life, but do we know where true happiness is to be found? Rick Phillips believes the Book of Psalms has the answer to this pressing question. Beginning with "The Way of Blessing" set out in Psalm 1, he takes us on a tour of twelve choice Psalms, drawing out many practical lessons aimed at encouraging those who would be better disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Other chapter titles include, "How to Praise the Lord", "How to Pray", "From Fear to Faith", "Pathway to Joy", and "Spiritual Recovery". This is a book that is easy to understand, but challenging to put into practice. It is a practical book that will well repay reading and studying.
D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Faith on Trial: Studies in Psalm 73 (Christian Focus).
Why do good people suffer unjustly — and yet others get away with it? The Psalmist, Asaph, dealt with this very problem in Psalm 73 — one that has often perplexed and discouraged God's people. Asaph reveals his own "no-holds-barred" feelings and leads us step by step from near-despair to final assurance. For this reason it has always appealed to preachers and counsellors. An excellent book for those struggling with, or wondering about, injustice in the world.
Geoffrey W. Grogan, Psalms [The Two Horizons Old Testament Commentary] (Eerdmans, 2008).
"Here is a work as theological as the Psalms deserve," says Alec Motyer, "and as devotionally warm as they demand." Just so. Geoffrey Grogan has that gift, that he shares with Motyer and Davis. Unlike the other recommendations this book covers each psalm with some brief, but insightful and helpful comments. It is perhaps a little "heavier" than the books mentioned above, but it is well worth having as a one-volume commentary on the Psalms.
