Resources for Preachers

maintained by Peter F Whyte (additional suggestions welcome)
As this page is always changing you will find a chronological list of additions to the preaching resources section of the site on the recent additions page.

Items are listed alphabetically by author or distributor. Where biographical information on an author is available this has been linked. Where reviews are known they have been linked. Common review sites are tagged by their initials: BP = Biblical Preaching; DR = Discerning Reader; EEE = Encouraging Expository Excellence, by John Brand, formerly published as SST = A Steward of the Secret Things; UW = Unashamed Workman.

Items on this page are identified by the following symbols: audio recordings, articles, blog entries, books, downloads, and podcasts.

‘Delightful, Dangerous Topical Preaching’, part 1, 4 July, part 2, 5 July 2007

“What Makes Preaching Excel?” (12 Sep 2007), taken from Calvin Theological Seminary's stimulating presentation called Faculty Statement on Excellence In Preaching.

Colin has also asked fellow pastors to send him outlines of how they prepare to preach. It’s always helpful to know how others do their preparation, as there is much to learn from one another. This list in an alphabetical, rather than chronological, order: Alistair Begg, Justin Buzzard, Hercules Collins, Peter Grainger (Charlotte Baptist Chapel, Edinburgh): Part one and two (extracts from his book Firm Foundations: 150 examples of how to structure a sermon) John Stott (How Stott Prepares a Sermon, 10 Jan 2007), Robert Talley, David Wayne

“I am extremely excited today,” writes Colin on 4 April 2007, “about announcing a new series called ‘Ten Questions for Expositors’. In great faith, I have written to number of better-known preachers on both sides of the Atlantic. Each of them has been sent ten questions on the subject of preaching.” John Brand has also used the same 10 questions to put to other preachers. I've included his postings here for convenience.

‘Too Clever, Too Crafty, Too Systematised’, Unashamed Workman 21 Nov 2007; this posting summarises four postings by Stephen Murray at his daylight blog: 13 Nov, 14 Nov, 19 Nov, & 20 Nov 2007. All the postings are based on Simon Manchester's article in the Briefing, Nov 2007.

Kindled Fire [reviews: Discerning Reader] ‘Seeking the Spirit: What Today's Preachers Can Learn from Charles Haddon Spurgeon’ in reformation21, February 2007, issue 18
This is a helpful article, drawing out what Spurgeon believed about preaching, with an emphasis on the Holy Spirit. The introduction draws out the striking similarities between Spurgeon’s age and our own, in terms of a loss of confidence in preaching, with calls to cut down on it, or cut it out altogether. Sounds familiar? A salient reminder should we have needed one that there is nothing new under the sun. Given the evident similarities in the times, such a study is thoroughly relevant. Eswine presents the article in a highly readable format that will repay careful reading and rereading. pfw
